Dear Dr. Lem:
I received the copy of your book %2Wielkosc Uranoj%1, and I
managed to get the material about Golem XIV read to me. It seems
excellent for our purposes, and Dr. Kandel has agreed to send me
a synopsis for the Committee. If we then decide to proceed,
and I am quite confident that we will, Professor Dertouzos or the M.I.T.
Press will write you with a definite proposal, and Dr. Kandel has said that
he would be willing to translate it.
Of course, we would need only a
non-exclusive right to print that particular material.
From what I
understand of its content from Dr. Kandel, we might want to print the
Golem's inaugural lecture also, because the idea that human and machine
intelligence will eventually merge is held by several people in the
field including Marvin Minsky and me, but has not really appeared in
print. Since it is rather long, the Committee may balk.
All articles in the book will be criticized by two
official critics, Joe Weizenbaum and myself, and the authors will have
the opportunity to reply to the criticism. Generally, Weizenbaum takes
a pessimistic and skeptical point of view, and I take an optimistic
point of view. Enclosed is an article from an encyclopedia year book
that expresses my point of view on some related issues.
I hope the opportunity will arise to meet you sometime,
and best wishes for 1976.
